Personal Safety and Crime Prevention Programs

While this list is comprehensive in nature, we recognize that there are other topics of discussion that may not be listed below. Alcohol and the Law
Overview of alcohol laws, responsible use of alcohol and consequences
of alcohol violations. Learn about the laws governing alcohol use, fake
identification and other topics of interest.
Arson/Fire Alarms/False Alarms
This program provides the opportunity to learn the potential consequences
of causing a false fire alarm. Find out what university and legal actions
may occur.
Bicycle Rodeo
Children’s program designed to teach safe bike riding techniques, the
value of predictability in traffic and the rules of the road.
Bicycle Registration
Bicycle registration includes affixing a reflective, numbered decal to
a bicycle and recording the information about the owner and the bicycle
for retrieval in the event the bicycle is stolen. Participation in bicycle
registration is voluntary but may be a deterrent to bicycle theft.
Bomb Threats
Bomb threats can be very disturbing and should always be taken seriously.
Considered in this program are the steps you should take if you receive
a bomb threat and what the police department will do in response.
Crime Watch
Formal organization of concerned citizens who met to educate themselves
about crime, and fight crime as a community.
Date/Acquaintance Rape and Relationship Violence
Relationship violence is the most common type of violence on university
campuses nationwide. During this program you will learn to identify relationship
violence, discuss its sources and possible solutions as well as lists
or resources and assistance available on campus and locally. Also discussed
are safety tips, suggestions for prevention and what to do if you or someone
you know becomes a victim of this crime.
Emergency Telephones
A system of special telephones, located strategically on campus provides
enhanced safety for the community. Discussion of the use, location, and
future of the system assists the community in more effectively using this
important campus resource.
Emergency Vehicle Maintenance
This program provides instruction in preventive vehicle maintenance, emergency
roadside repairs and "how to change a flat".
Fake Identification
This program provides information on the consequences of possessing a
fraudulent driver's license or identification card.
Obscene/Harassing Phone calls
Obscene or harassing telephone calls can be very disturbing and should
always be taken seriously. Considered in this program are the steps you
should take if you receive obscene or harassing telephone call and what
the police department will do in response.
OP Id (Operation Identification)
Programs for OP Id are schedule in residence halls, Villages and offices
on request basis. Personal property is engraved with the owner's the driver’s
license or social security number. Identifying information about the property
is recorded and retained by the police department for use should the item
be stolen.
Orientation Programs (New/Transfer/ International Students)
The police department regularly provides information reviewing the safety
and security measures the university has in place and how to use those
services. Orientation programs are very useful to those new to the University
of Florida.
Personal Safety
Designed to inform and educate on the vital issue of personal safety.
Common sense, smart decision making, being aware of ones surroundings
and the buddy system are among the topics discussed to arm the community
against personal violence. Sometimes refereed to as Rape Prevention the
information in this program is vitally important to the university community.
Property Security
Designed to inform and educate on the issue of property security. Topics
include what an individual can to secure property, mark property for identification
and prevent property from being stolen.
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)
A self-defense course for women only. The class is taught in 3 sections
over 3 consecutive days. The first section is classroom discussion with
a lecture component. The second section discusses confrontation, options
in various types of situations, and how and why to make a decision to
resist or not. The third section continues with confrontational dynamics,
principles of self-defense, and resistance when faced with weapons. Students
will systematically learn stances, yelling, movement, blocking, and escape
methods along with many other defense techniques.
Shoplifting
Learn what the laws concerning shoplifting are, the consequences of the
crime and how a shoplifter can be spotted.
Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol (SNAP)
SNAP provides nighttime campus escorts whenever classes are in session.
By calling 392- SNAP those persons on campus can obtain reliable assistance
while traveling on campus. SNAP provides an alternative to traveling alone.
Programs are regularly presented about SNAP to encourage use and promote
personal safety.
Stalking
This program defines stalking, explains what an individual can do to protect
themselves and how the police will respond to a report of a suspected
stalker.
Suspicious Persons
Frequently people in the community see individuals or situations that
simply do not seem right to them. This program provides an overview of
suspicious activity and encourages individuals to trust their instincts.
If something seems out of place to you as a community member there may
be something actually wrong and you should notify the police.
Travel Safety
All of us travel by car, bicycle, on foot and by many other methods. This
program provides important safety tips no matter the mode of transportation
used.
Traffic Stops
Learn about how traffic enforcement is conducted what your rights are
and ask questions about legal issues of interest to you.
Weapons and firearms
Learn about the laws and university rules controlling firearms and other
weapons. Find out whether a weapon is a good choice for you.
Workplace Violence
This program defines workplace violence, identifies characteristics of
past offenders and what individuals can do to prevent this growing form
of violence.
