Driver Safety
This section uses the word “car” for brevity, but presents some state laws, university regulations, and other useful information related to driving any motor vehicle—including a car, a truck, a motorcycle, or a moped—on campus. Information related to using an electric bike or an electric scooter is in the section “Ride”. You must follow all state laws and university regulations, including those this website does not present.
Drive slow
Unless posted otherwise, the campus-wide speed limit is 20 miles per hour. University Regulation 3.011(3). Within family housing areas, the speed limit is 10 miles per hour. University Regulation 3.011(3).
Avoid vehicle-restricted areas
You may not drive on some campus roads at certain times. Refer to this map for information on where the university prohibits driving a motor vehicle: Vehicle restricted zone
Plan ahead to park
The university does not provide free parking. Plan ahead if you would like to park a car on campus. Refer to this campus map for information on where and how you may park a motor vehicle: Parking
Put down your phone
You may not text while you drive. Florida Statutes 316.305.
Anticipate people walking and riding
When you drive, anticipate people walking and riding. Traffic crashes are particularly dangerous for people who are not inside a car. Do not drive in a way that could threaten a person who is walking or riding.
Never drive or park on a sidewalk or on a bicycle lane
You may not drive a motor vehicle on a sidewalk or on a bicycle lane. Florida Statutes 316.1995(1); University Regulations 3.006 (4)(e).
Stop for people walking
When you drive toward a crosswalk, wait for any people in the crosswalk. Florida Statutes 316.130(7)(c).
When you drive toward an intersection, wait for any people walking or riding a bicycle across the road. Florida Statutes 316.130(7)(c) (a person driving toward a crosswalk must wait for a person in the crosswalk) and Florida Statutes 316.003(17) (a crosswalk exists on all sides of an intersection, even when no markings on the road show a crosswalk).
Pass safely
When you pass a person riding a bicycle, move to the left so you are at least 3 feet from the person when passing. Florida Statutes 316.083(2).
Let the bus back in
You must wait for a bus that is leaving a pullout bay. Florida Statutes 316.0815(1).
