Joining GEMRU
What does the time commitment for GEMRU look like?
GEMRU responders generally work one scheduled shift each week. Shifts are typically 3 or 6 hours and are scheduled between approximately 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. based on member availability.
GEMRU membership also includes other unit activities throughout the semester.
Does GEMRU prefer EMTs or First Responders?
No. EMTs and First Responders are viewed equally during the GEMRU application process.
Applicants may meet GEMRU’s medical certification requirement with either an eligible EMT certification or First Responder / Emergency Medical Responder certification.

How can I become First Responder or EMR certified?
UF students have options for obtaining the minimum medical certification needed to apply to GEMRU.

Application & Entrance Exam
How should I prepare for the entrance exam?
The best preparation is to review the material from your previous EMS training and spend additional time on areas you find challenging.
On exam day, plan to arrive early and bring a pen or pencil.
What advice do you have for the application?
Proofread your application before submitting it, and be yourself.

What does the GEMRU application process include?
The recruitment process includes an initial application, entrance exam, interview decisions, interviews, and final decisions.
