Law Enforcement Officer – Certified

Starting Salary: $64,000 a year

Description

Certified Law Enforcement Officers with the University of Florida Police Department patrol campus to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Officers patrol by foot, bicycle, and vehicle while responding to calls for service and proactively working to prevent crime.

Primary duties include:

  • Patrol assigned areas to provide safety and security for the university community and facilities

  • Maintain orderly traffic flow and investigate traffic crashes

  • Respond to complaints, disturbances, and criminal incidents

  • Conduct preliminary investigations, including securing crime scenes and collecting evidence while maintaining chain of custody

  • Make arrests and issue parking and moving citations when appropriate

  • Assist other law enforcement agencies, fire services, and emergency medical personnel

  • Provide crowd, traffic, and security control during athletic events and other special events

  • Provide armed escorts for university funds when required

  • Provide escorts for ill or injured students not requiring ambulance transport

  • Conduct surveillance or intelligence assignments based on crime trends

  • Attend required training and provide testimony in court proceedings

This position may require overtime based on operational needs.

This position is designated as an Essential Employee, meaning personnel may be recalled to work during emergencies, disasters, special events, or university closures as directed by the Chief of Police.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Must meet requirements outlined in Chapter 943, Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code

  • Previous law enforcement experience preferred



Law Enforcement Officer Trainee – Non-Certified

Starting Salary: $58,000 a year

Description

The Law Enforcement Officer Trainee position is designed for candidates who do not currently hold Florida law enforcement certification and require sponsorship through a police academy or cross-over academy.

Trainees will attend the Basic Recruit Training Program, which consists of:

  • 770 contact hours

  • 24 weeks of training

  • 8 hours per day, 5 days per week

UFPD provides all books, training materials, and uniforms. Trainees receive full salary and benefits during academy training.

Upon successful completion of the academy and passing the State Officer Certification Examination, trainees will be promoted to the Certified Law Enforcement Officer position with the associated salary increase.

This position is designated as an Essential Employee and may require recall during emergencies, disasters, special events, or university closures.

  • Must meet Florida statutory and administrative requirements under Chapter 943, Florida Statutes



Police Communications Operator

  • Police Communications Operator I: $49,883

  • Police Communications Operator II: $52,826


Description

The Communications Section serves as the central hub of emergency response for the University of Florida Police Department, providing 24/7 dispatch services for law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services.

Communications Operators are responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls and coordinating the appropriate response to incidents affecting the campus community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls for service

  • Dispatching law enforcement, fire, and medical units

  • Monitoring radio communications and emergency systems

  • Providing critical information to responding personnel

  • Supporting officers and first responders during emergency situations

UFPD provides extensive training to ensure operators are prepared to perform their duties effectively.

Training includes:

  • Six (6) weeks of paid classroom training preparing employees for the state certification exam

  • Nine (9) weeks of individualized on-the-job training to develop skills and competency


Communications Operators receive ongoing training and support to maintain proficiency and ensure the highest level of service to the university community.
