Special Events

Each year, the University of Florida welcomes thousands of visitors for a wide range of events, including athletic competitions, concerts, commencement ceremonies, student gatherings, and community programs. The UFPD Special Events Unit plays a critical role in ensuring these events are safe, secure, and well-coordinated.

Operating beyond routine patrol functions, the Special Events Unit is responsible for the comprehensive planning and execution of law enforcement operations for events across campus. Led by a Lieutenant, the unit develops detailed operational plans that address staffing, traffic control, crowd management, emergency response, and risk mitigation.

The unit works in close partnership with university stakeholders—including UF Athletics (UAA), event organizers, and campus departments—as well as local, state, and federal public safety agencies. This collaborative approach ensures seamless coordination and a unified response to any situation that may arise.

From small campus events to large-scale gatherings drawing tens of thousands of attendees, the Special Events Unit ensures that appropriate resources are in place to protect participants, maintain order, and support the overall success of each event.

To request law enforcement support for a special event, please complete the Special Events Request Form. Requests should be submitted at least 21 days prior to the event to allow for proper planning and staffing. Please note that costs may be associated depending on the scope and resources required.

K9 Unit

The UFPD K9 Unit was created in 2002 in response to the need for increased security precautions at special events on the university campus.  All UFPD K9 teams are certified through the Florida Law Enforcement Canine Association (FLECA) and are trained in the search and detection of explosive devices/materials. The K9 Unit routinely assists local law enforcement agencies in bomb detection operations and pre-event sweeps.  The K9  Unit also plays an important part in community involvement by attending S.C.O.P.E. activities and other events throughout Alachua County.

Bicycle Unit

The Bicycle Unit allows for the agency’s quick response during large-scale events where patrol vehicles would not be accessible due to increased pedestrian traffic. UFPD holds two Law Enforcement Bike Training (LEBA) per year; all sworn members shall complete and pass the 40-hour course before riding a bicycle while on duty. UFPD opens the course to any agencies in Alachua County as well as the surrounding areas.

Honor Guard

The Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit comprised of sworn members of the police department who are highly motivated and maintain exceptionally high standards of appearance, conduct, and show aptitude for ceremonial duty. The primary role of the unit is to provide funeral honors for fallen heroes.  They are also responsible for displaying and escorting the national flag on ceremonial occasions. They participate in the annual Alachua County Law Enforcement Memorial in unison with other local agencies.
