Evidence

The Evidence Custodian is responsible for the secure collection, processing, storage, and disposition of all evidence and property obtained during criminal investigations. The unit ensures that all items are handled in accordance with strict chain-of-custody procedures, preserving the integrity of evidence for investigative and judicial purposes.

The Evidence Custodian works closely with UFPD officers and investigators to properly document, package, and catalog evidence submitted to the property and evidence facility. The unit also coordinates with local, state, and federal crime laboratories for forensic analysis when necessary.

In addition to maintaining evidence for active investigations and court proceedings, the Evidence Unit manages the release, return, or lawful destruction of property in accordance with state law and department policy. Through careful documentation, secure storage practices, and detailed tracking systems, the unit ensures that all evidence is handled professionally and maintained to the highest standards of accountability.
