Training
The University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) Training Division is committed to ensuring all personnel are well-trained, prepared, and equipped to meet the demands of modern campus policing. The division, comprised of a Lieutenant, Sergeant, Field Training Officer, and Program Assistant, oversees all aspects of training and equipment for both sworn and non-sworn personnel.
All training conducted by UFPD meets and exceeds standards established by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC), ensuring officers remain compliant and proficient in best practices.
Sworn Officer Training
Sworn personnel must meet CJSTC certification requirements prior to hire. Upon joining UFPD, officers complete a comprehensive 160-hour (four-week) training program covering but not limited to:
- Use of force and department-issued equipment
- High-liability areas of law enforcement
- Defensive tactics
- CPR and AED certification
- Law enforcement driving techniques
- Report writing
- Investigative and interview techniques
- Crime scene and evidence procedures
- Department Policies and Procedures
Following initial training, officers enter a 12-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program within the Patrol Division, where they are mentored, evaluated, and assessed in real-world scenarios.
Ongoing Training
Training continues throughout an officer’s career. UFPD personnel participate in regular in-service training cycles that reinforce required certifications and enhance skills, ensuring readiness to respond to evolving public safety challenges.
